Perseverance led to stardom for Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson's career was launched when she was voted the first "American Idol" winner in September 2002.

Her albums -- "Thankful," "Breakaway," "My December," "All I Ever Wanted" and "Stronger," released in October -- have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, 10 million in the United states alone. She has had nine singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart and has received several awards, including two Grammys.

Her current single, "Mister Know It All," is No. 2 on the Hot A/C charts. "Stronger" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Album Charts.

Promoter Dwight Glenn of Dwight Glenn Productions said that he and O'Reilly Family Event Center are honored Clarkson is bringing her show to town.

"This reaffirms our belief that Springfield ... is gaining a national reputation for great shows and community support for events such as this," he said.

The tour that kicks off in January will include a stop at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and other well-known venues.

Opening for Clarkson is San Francisco-based singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson.

Clarkson, 29, was born and grew up in Burleson, Texas. Her parents divorced when she was 6.

"My mom had to do everything on her own," her website biography says. "She put herself through school. ... I think watching that molded me into this person who wants to relay a message to women everywhere that they're capable of doing whatever they set their mind to."

She was first drawn to singing at age 8 after visiting an African-American church. She recalls wanting to feel whatever they were feeling.

Her singing ability was first noticed when a music teacher heard her singing in the hallway when she was in the seventh grade. She joined the choir and continued to be active in choral activities throughout high school, later earning top honors as a member of the Texas All-State Choir.

After graduation, she held several jobs to finance a demo CD and market herself to record labels, with no results, so she went to Los Angeles with a friend.

Astro received the fewest votes this week and was automatically eliminated as a result. I’ve got to admit that surprised me. I figured if anything he’d get the judges to save him if he was in the Bottom 2 again.
