A Brief History of Wisconsin

Wisconsin Construction began January 25, 1941, and it was launched December 7, 1943 - exactly two years after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Wisconsin is an Iowa-class battleship: a warship intended to escort carriers fast attack time.

Wisconsin is nearly 900 feet long and, when fully charged, moving 58,000 tons. Even at that size, Wisconsin made 33 knots on the open sea to enable it to compete with the speed of modern aircraft carriers. For comparison, the nuclear powered aircraft carrier first, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), had a top speed of 33.6 knots.

Once built, the Wisconsin was equipped with nine 16-inch guns located in three towers: two front, one rear. In addition, the ship was equipped with 20 guns 5 inches and over 120 20mm and 40mm anti-aircraft guns.
