London 2012 Olympics: proud to be 'plastic', proud to be British

The frustration felt by some home-grown athletes is articulated by British long-jumper JJ Jegede, who was born five minutes from the Olympic Stadium but faces stiff competition for a place in Team GB from Julian Reid, a dual national who competed for Jamaica at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin but arrived in Britain clutching his UK passport last summer.

“He’s from Jamaica and trains in the US and represents GB,” said Jegede. “I’ve worked so much of my life to do that, so it makes me a bit peeved.”

The counter-argument is that the new arrivals have been a boon to British Olympic sport by raising standards of home-grown team-mates and younger athletes, particularly in Olympic sports with small talent pools.

PLASTIC BRITS FACTFILE
- 50 of the 550 British athletes in the 2012 Olympics were born abroad
- In 1936 Britain won gold in ice hockey. Nine of the squad of 13 were Canadian.
- Anguillan-born long jumper Shara Proctor will represent Great Britain in London as the British overseas territory is not eligible to compete.
- In Athens in 1896, 241 athletes competed in 43 events representing 14 nations. In 2012 as estimated 10,500 athletes will participate in 302 events for 204 nations.

And, besides, anyone who holds a British passport is perfectly entitled to compete for Team GB under British Olympic Association rules, regardless of whether they were born in Ohio, Oslo or, in Stadnik’s case, Khmelnitsky Oblast.

“You’ve always got athletes in your team who have dual nationality,” said Andy Hunt, the BOA chief executive. “The bottom line is that if an athlete is a British citizen with a British passport and eligible to compete at the Olympic Games, then we have the right to consider that athlete for Team GB selection.”

No sports have been keener to tap into the well of overseas talent than volleyball, handball and basketball, which is perhaps not surprising given their lack of Olympic tradition in Britain and their low international standing when they began their journeys to London 2012.

to travel, whether for business or pleasure, is simply risible. Like many of his fellow objectors, Lord Astor has demonstrated that intolerance and ignorance of the needs of northern England still thrives in certain pockets of the Home Counties.

We got the train, now let's have a plan for planes

Transport Secretary Justine Greening must talk the talk for the next few years to convince the electorate that blowing £32 billion to cut the time it takes to travel to England's second city to 49 minutes is the right thing to do.

Fracking fears for Southern rail commuters on London to Brighton line

SOUTH East England's economic artery of the main London to Brighton rail line, including the Victorian Balcombe Viaduct, could be affected by “fracking” for oil in a nearby village, according to anxious residents. Fears for railway services and

Excursion trains, whether on Sundays or weekdays, find little favour, we fancy, with those who do not need to travel by them. They are apt to bring the many into domains previously engrossed by the few, and to destroy the privacy and retirement which

Off the rails

That is similar to air travel times, taking account of trips to and from airports and waiting times. Just why the rail trip should be made even shorter is not apparent. Moreover, about half the extension would be in England.

Train Travel app now sports a live tile | wpcentral | Windows Phone ...

The National Rail app (Train Travel), which is perfect for any commuter in UK, has been updated to 1.5. The changelog lists live tile support and Twitter integration as the two alterations in this version, coupled with improved help and tutorials.

The live tile can display any journey you've planned by saving any given timetable. The depart time (and date) is then displayed as well as the station codes. I did a test run with Shoeburyness (SRY) to London Fenchurch Street (FST) and the tile updated within moments as well as displaying the time we expect to arrive at the destination.

The app can be downloaded for a hefty £4.99, but is surely worth it if (like me) you use the trains a lot. Head on over to the Marketplace to purchase Train Travel (opens Zune).

Rail Planner looks much better implemented from the screen shots but it doesn't have trial available. GrrrrThe rest of the world is incorrect to refer to the UK as England I'm afraid GP101.England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales make up the UK, it would be equally incorrect to refer to the UK as Scotland.(Yes Richard Possibly, if it ever comes to light)Anyone got something to happen on the Live Tile yet ?
