It will kick off at 9 a.m. Aug. 5 with a Retirement Expo geared for ages 55 and older. Highlights include gospel songs by Nehemiah Brown, dancers from the Grand Finale Dance Studio, informational booths, Bingo games, and free breakfast, lunch and gift bags.

The Kiwanis Club will make your family a hearty breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gladstone Senior Center, 1050 Portland Ave. Meanwhile, folks will be setting up outside in anticipation of the big parade. The marchers and floats will leave Gladstone High School at 10 a.m. and proceed down Portland Avenue to the park.

Festival highlights include live music, entertainment, vendor and food booths, a chili cook-off, a talent show, fire engine tours, and other activities. Inflatable toys, bounce houses and games will keep the youngsters busy.

A beer garden will be open to the 21-and-older crowd from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in the park. Dances for the adults will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight -- featuring country western music by the Crossfire Band Friday and rock and roll tunes by Rockin' Robert Saturday. Admission is $3.

The Saturday entertainment lineup also includes the Dirt Farm Cowboys, Gladstone High School Jazz Band and pianist Mario Camboni.

Sunday festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stage shows include Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts, impersonator Kimberly Hall as "Reba," and the Portland Metro Concert Band.

A library book sale, raffles, historical tours, 5K and 10K walks and runs, more bingo games, and the annual Gladstone Honorees Ceremony will round out the weekend.

Portland mayor's race: Sam Adams' exit puts focus on Eileen Brady ...

Now that Mayor Sam Adams and other big names have bowed out of the 2012 Portland mayor's race, the spotlight is on the two major candidates: Eileen Brady and Charlie Hales .

Both trumpet business backgrounds, sustainability chops and at least $100,000 war chests. But they no longer have an unpopular incumbent in Adams as a political foil, and that means they'll have to spend the next several months telling voters who they are, what they've done and what they want for Portland's future.

"You can no longer say, 'I'm not Sam Adams, and that's good enough,'" said Len Bergstein, a local political analyst and lobbyist. "Both of these people are going to have to get people to invest in them."

He added: "The challenge is to give people a reason to care."

And barring entry of another contender, Brady and Hales will have to chase many of the same big-money donors and top-tier endorsements -- and differentiate themselves from each other. There are already signs that fight has started.

Brady's background

Brady, 50, has never held elected office. She boasts instead of helping establish several small projects with "big vision" that grew into local landmarks.

Most visible is New Seasons Market, the chain of 10 stores that launched in 2000. Already, Brady's shorthand identification in news accounts is "co-founder" of New Seasons.

The tag line leaves out much of Brady's career and fails to fully define her role at New Seasons, where Brady was never formally employed. But Brady embraces the moniker. "I've been called that for 10 years," she said, noting the label long preceded her candidacy.

Brady moved to Portland at 24 from Olympia, where she attended The Evergreen State College. She spent five years at Nature's Fresh Northwest, the former natural foods store, where she rose from equipment buyer to human resources director.
