AGO CHAPTER NEWS [American Organist, The]

REGION I- NEW ENGLAND Bangor, Maine. May 15, a members' recital was held at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Blue Hill. Joan Kroehler sang two of Dvorak's Biblical Songs in memory of longtime member Fred Jones. Organists participating were Lorna Russen, Brian MacFarland, Clayton Rogers, Gena Churchill, Gerald Wheeler, Barbara Smith, Kay Eames, Anne Small, Catherine Bruno, Carlton Russell, Douglas Beck, and Julia Morris-Myers. Following the recital, the slate of officers for 2011-12 was presented and approved: Carlton Russell (dean), Julia Morris-Myers (sub-dean), Kay Eames (secretary), Brian MacFarland (treasurer and registrar), Alice Mummé (newsletter editor and senior adviser), and Jane Schroeder and Barbara Smith (executive committee members at large). - Carlton T. Russell New Hampshire. Jan. 22, Barbara Owen, noted organist and musicologist, presented an audiovisuallecture titled "The Boston Classicists and Organ Music in the Gilded Age" at Rye Congregational Church. Host music director David Wold assisted. Owen traced the history and music of "First Generation" New England organ composer Dudley Buck (1839-1909) to that of "Third Generation" Amy Cheney Beach (1867-1944). A box lunch concluded the morning event. - Nicholas Girgus Vermont. May 22, a members' recital was held at the Wilder Center in Wilder, Vt., on the newly restored Geo. Stevens organ (c. 1848). Formerly the Congregational Church, the building is now privately owned. While the building was being restored, the organ was discovered behind a wall that had concealed it since about 1950.
