UPDATE: Grandville home invasion and woman's abduction was planned, police say
GRANDVILLE -- The former son-in-law of a Grandville woman who was bound and abducted from her home last week is one of three suspects arrested for the incident and police cite revenge as one motive.
Police arrested the three suspects -- two Wyoming people, ages 21 and 25, and a 33-year-old Alto man -- on Monday and all three have confessed, Grandville Deputy Police Chief Dan Steere said.
Steere said motives for the alleged crime were ransom and, for the Alto man, revenge over child-custody issues.
Two masked suspects on Aug. 9 entered the home of a Grandville couple at 4 a.m., held them at knifepoint and then bound the wife with duct tape before taking her from the home. They allegedly stole the couple's SUV, loaded her inside and ended up tying her to a telephone pole along Division Avenue just inside Allegan County.
The woman managed to get free and go for help.
Steere said the suspects had planned the break-in and abduction. The former son-in-law stayed outside the home during the break-in and followed the SUV into Allegan County, Steere said.
He said the Alto man, the former son-in-law of the Grandville couple, apparently was angry with the couple for helping their daughter with attorneys and other matters in a child-custody dispute.
"This was a little payback and revenge," he said.
Steere said the Alto man is acquainted with the other two suspects, but he did not explain details of their relationship.
The two Wyoming suspects allegedly went into the home Aug. 9 and demanded the ransom from the husband, but no money was ever paid. They gave him a telephone number to call, but he called police immediately after the suspects left.
At the same time, his wife had managed to get help for herself.
Steere said the suspects are expected to be arraigned Wednesday, possibly on multiple felonies including kidnapping.

He said the Alto man, the former son-in-law of the Grandville couple, apparently was angry with the couple for helping their daughter with attorneys and other matters in a child-custody dispute. "This was a little payback and revenge," he said.
