West Palm Beach County native lives passion by creating custom horse trailers

By the time Catey Stomski was 3 years old in her native Pahokee, she wanted a pony. She got that pony when she was 5, and she's had horses ever since. She's also figured out a way to make horses her life.

John and Catey Stomski Horse Trailer Sales is part of their Willowood Stables in Greenacres, where they cater to Wellington horse-show enthusiasts. They've had the stables since 1970, with their 5 acres holding up to 31 horses.

The trailer business has been going since 1985, and the Stomskis can customize them anyway you want. For a two-horse trailer, the prices start at $10,000, and go all the way to more than $100,000.

"That gives you satellite TV, and a closed-circuit camera so you can monitor how the horse is doing," said Catey. "I've got two of those in stock right now and one of them is sold."

Stomski said that in Palm Beach County, hunter-jumpers and dressage are the main interests, so the horses tend to be large.

"Dressage customers are immaculate, and very picky," she said. "They're more hands-on. They're mostly ladies and they drive their own vehicles, haul their own horses."

The Stomskis have seen hills and valleys in their business, but she said that these days it's something different.

"Upscale horses are maintaining, but blue-collar horses are in decline," Stomski said. "Middle-class America, people who might have quarter horses, people who weren't rich, but who weren't poor either, have been profoundly affected. Palm Beach county no longer has any quarter horse shows. Zero. Only Venice and Tampa have quarter horse shows anymore."

Today, Stomski herself is down to two quarter horses. Although she doesn't ride often, "I see them every day and mess with them," she said. "We groom them and give them cookies. They're part of our everyday life. It's not like they're out on the back 40 and nobody's paying any attention to them."
