Construction lifts off:Popularity of airport use means more of everything

More flights, more construction and more parking are signs that Minot International Airport is experiencing booming times.

The airport last Thursday opened a new, graveled parking lot on the east side that will be strictly for Allegiant Air customers. The lot has helped to divert more than 100 cars from the main lot, and the hope is that the new parking will ease up the congestion in the main lot for other customers, said Andrew Solsvig, airport director.

Allegiant customers are asked to pre-pay to use the lot.

"It makes it easier when they need to get out. They've already paid and are ready to go," Solsvig said.

On Nov. 15, airport officials will open bids on a project to create more paved parking. The work would start in the spring. Because the project will include paving the east lot just opened for Allegiant customers, other temporary parking sites will have to be found, and the airport may have to institute a shuttle service, Solsvig said.

Traffic to the airport and total boardings could go up further with the addition of new flights.

Allegiant will be adding additional flights around the holidays to its existing Thursday and Sunday flights to each Phoenix and Las Vegas. During the week preceding Thanksgiving, there will be three extra days of flights to Las Vegas. There will be a couple of additional flights over Christmas Eve and Christmas as well.

Starting in January, Allegiant proposes to institute regular Friday and Monday flights to Las Vegas in addition to maintaining both its Thursday and Sunday flights.

United Airlines will be adding a third flight to Denver starting Dec. 15. With the additional flight, the airline will have planes leaving around 7:30 a.m., between noon and 1 p.m. and in the evening around 7 p.m.

Delta Air Lines, flying six daily trips this winter, looks to bring back its seventh flight in the spring.

The decisions by Allegiant and United to expand service follow boarding statistics showing heavy bookings.
