Bilingual Contradiction~Letters to the Editor, con't | Moncton News
The Moncton version:
Here are some things that seem contradictory to me.
I’m from a French/Acadian/English family. I speak functional French but I’m not classified as bilingual. Anyone speaking French with a functional knowledge of English is classified bilingual and assumed to be Acadian.
I can’t enroll my son in French school because I, nor my wife, has French for a Mother Tongue but I must enroll him in 80% or 100% French Immersion. Jewish people had to show a certain number of Germanic grandparents to receive citizenship status. This is different of course; isn’t it?
I’m from Acadian blood (Anglocadian as I call it) but the Acadian Society does not represent me. A lot of French people aren’t Acadian but the Acadian Society represents them! The Acadian Society is just a Minority French Society and does NOT represent all the French speaking in the province.
English people must take the onus for preserving French by learning to speak it or making their children learn it when the Constitution says we are NOT expected to learn both official languages.
Extremist from the SANB say it is ok to advertise for French only employees (dishwasher job on Job Bank recently listed no skills or education requirements but stipulated must speak, read and write French) and they promote the French sign laws that stipulate private sector businesses MUST advertise in French First or French Above.
Bill Z-22 (French Sign law) is taken almost verbatim from the French Language Laws of Quebec’s Bill 101, which was condemned by the UN, yet Atholville and the Commissioner of Official Language for New Brunswick supported it. The French language MUST be placed before or above the English language on all privately owned commercial signage. It is illegal and against the law to place the English language first on you privately owned sign and illegal to put up an English only sign. Isn’t English an Official language in Canada?
