In life, Abelardo "Lalo" Delgado was known by many titles. Father of Chicano Renaissance poetry. Artist. Chicano warrior. Social justice activist. Humanitarian.

As a child growing up in Barrio Segundo, I had the honor of knowing Lalo by all these names. But it was one of my greatest blessings to know him simply as "friend."

With his death, July 23, Lalo joined the likes of Cesar E.Chavez, Ricardo Sanchez, Ruben Salazar and Nina Cordero - men and women who have raised their voices without fear, pens and placards of protest on behalf of justice and for nuestra gente.

In life, Lalo raised our consciousness. For some of us, the loss of someone like Lalo just gives us energy, revives the spirit to continue to raise our own voices, raise our own pens. Lalo has been and is a Chicano poet. His words and his life has always been our lucha, for our struggle.Lalo dreamed of what we all dream about: social justice, beauty, peace, education for our children and hope that our people would rise up together, fulfilling their destiny.

With his words, Lalo made these dreams seem within reach. In his poetry, we could see beyond the poverty, abuse, repression, political oppression and drug infested streets. Lalo Delgado was really our first real Chicano activist, visionary and role model.

My first memories of him are at the center of Our Lady of young people, alongside Rahm's father, and later when he organized a hunger strike. Later, Lalo became our mentor and, at times, our goalkeeper. This man, this master of words, would read our poetry. He would like to talk about how we see life in a different direction. Yes, there were around social injustice in our community. But we could not allow him to exasperate us. Do you dig a hole, he said.

Lalo was an optimist.Even in the last week of his fight against cancer, his words were full of humor and hopes, as if nothing had happened with him.
