The FBI has launched a mobile application that enables parents and guardians to store photos and identifying information for children, said San Diego FBI Special Agent in Charge Keith Slotter.
It is currently available for use on iPhones and can be downloaded for free from the App Store on iTunes. There are plans to expand it to other mobile devices, the FBI said.
If a child is missing, parents and guardians would be able to quickly give law-enforcement officials photos and other information.
The FBI does not store the information. Parents are urged to check their mobile provider’s terms of service for information about the security of data stored on the device, the FBI said.
The FBI also provides free child ID kits to parents at community events in San Diego County. The kits can store a child’s photo, fingerprints, DNA and other identifying characteristics.
The kits will be distributed on Aug. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive at the Mira Mesa Chick-fil-A at 10750 Camino Ruiz.
