Hey, you guys! We’re going to talk about your restaurant pet peeves today.
Am I grating on your nerves yet? Because “you guys” was, by far, the most common complaint I got after asking readers to write in about what annoyed them most about the dining experience.
Kathleen Taylor, of Fair Lawn , noted “the almost universal habit of waiters and waitresses, including those who are old enough to know better, addressing all of their patrons, regardless of age or sex, as ‘you guys’. I AM NOT A GUY! I am a lady and I would appreciate being treated like one. Is it too much effort to use words like ‘ma’am’ and ‘sir’ or ‘ladies and gentlemen’?”
Helen Giordano of Tenafly agreed, noting, “A simple ‘What will you have?’ or ‘hi’ or ‘hello’ without anything else would be fine.”
“You guys” wasn’t the only language complaint mentioned by readers. Several said they were offended when a waiter said “no problem” instead of “you’re welcome.”
I hadn’t previously given much thought to either term, so for some perspective, I went to an expert: Diana Peck, a professor at William Paterson Univer sity in Wayne , who teaches courses on how we use language to communicate.
Peck said “you guys” was a term that people in about “their early 30s on down might use colloquially as they were growing up. It was clearly intended to be inclusive,” Peck said. “But if you didn’t grow up with people using the term this way, then you hear ‘you guys’ and it sounds like it’s just about the men.”
She said that waiters shouldn’t necessarily stop using the term altogether — they should just be mindful of whom they’re addressing. “Saying ‘you guys’ would be something that might be appropriate for a young waiter to say to a group of young diners as a way of establishing rapport. But it would be considered inappropriate for older diners.

A study out of Harvard University has found that healthy young men who indulge in junk food binges are putting their fertility at risk. And those who ate foods high in trans fats -- like deep-fried and processed foods -- fared the worst.
