David C. Henley: Severe cuts impact Fallon's WNC campus

Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 29, at the Fallon campus of Western Nevada College, and WNC students, their families and community members will be learning in the coming weeks how the state's drastic financial crisis has negatively affected the school's viability, stability and capacity to accommodate all those seeking an education. John Kinkella, WNC's director of student services who is based at the main campus in Carson City, tells me that the 18 percent cut in the college's budget mandated by the Legislature at its recent session has necessitated the closure of the five Fallon-run rural academic centers, severe trimming of faculty, staff and administrators and the termination of several degree and vocational programs. Because of the budget cutbacks, though, Kinkella said that many if not most of the Fallon classes will be taught by part-time instructors because of the retirement of several full-time faculty who took “buyouts,” there will be a skeleton front-office staff and Bus Scharmann, the long-time former dean and director of rural programs who retired in June, will not be replaced. Instead, Kinkella and other WNC administrators will run the Fallon campus from Carson City with local coordination provided by Ron Marrujo, the sole counselor remaining on campus, and Monica Fairbanks, a writing instructor, works directly for the division chair of science, math and engineering with the scheduling of those divisional courses college-wide. Although gratified that the grant-funded Speciality Crop Institute here has been spared, Lattin, the owner of Lattin Farms, says the only way to halt the college's slide is to convince the local population that “WNC is important to our community's reputation, growth, culture, stability and economy” and galvanize residents into action “to save our school.
